What’s a name for a place?
The term “restaurant” comes from the Latin word for “dinner” (referring to the food).
The first known recorded use of the word “rest” is in 1684.
In the mid-19th century, a French woman named Louise Besson, who was traveling to Paris for a doctor’s appointment, noticed a sign on a post office building.
“L’amour est le reste, mais la terre est le même,” she wrote.
She was the first person to use the term in a publication, and it was not until 1920 that the word entered the English language.
“Restaurant is a name,” says Jennifer McNeill, assistant professor of English at The University of Maryland.
“We don’t usually associate a restaurant with a place.”
She says restaurant names are generally used in a descriptive sense, such as “a very well-run restaurant.”
A restaurant is often referred to as a “resto” or “restuard.”
Restaurants have their own menus, and they serve their own food, McNeill says.
“There’s a lot of information that goes into restaurant names,” she says.
McNeill points to the American Indian, African American, and Hispanic communities as examples of the kinds of restaurants in different areas. “

McNeill notes that many restaurant names reflect the names of other cultures, such to “The Little Bird,” which is in Texas and refers to the city’s African American population.
McNeil also notes that some names are often used for a particular business that is not a restaurant, such in “The Chicken,” which was a chicken processing plant in New Jersey.
The concept of restaurant names is changing, McNeil says.
Restaurants are being incorporated into other categories, such a “fast casual” concept, which refers to casual dining where diners order at the table and wait in line to be seated.
And restaurants that specialize in the health-conscious or vegan market are being added.
McNeill says the concept of restaurants is not only being discussed, but has been gaining in popularity.
She says many people who would rather not eat out, or are not interested in ordering from a restaurant have turned to restaurants as an alternative.
“They have the opportunity to be in the dining room, to see people eating in the restaurant, and to learn about food,” she said.
Many restaurants have expanded their menus and offered more services to cater to a wider audience.
Restaurant Brands, a national industry group for the restaurant industry, said in a news release that the number of restaurant brands added in 2017 reached more than 500,000, up from about 300,000 in 2016.
The group noted that more than 1,300 restaurants are now certified as Certified Food Service, which is the highest level of certification available.
“As the number and complexity of restaurant locations grow, so does the need for more restaurant brands to be certified to provide the same level of service,” the group said.
The number of restaurants opened in 2017 increased 7 percent from 2016.
According to the New York Times, the number in 2017 surpassed the number from 2015, but in 2016 it was only slightly above the total in 2015.
McNeill said it is difficult to predict exactly how many restaurants will open next year.
“I think you’ll see some consolidation,” she predicts.
“It’s going to be a bit more concentrated.
The growth is going to slow down.
The restaurants are probably going to close up.
There’s a chance they’re going to become franchised, which will be a different kind of business model.”
