Porto win their fourth consecutive Europa League qualifier

Porto scored three goals to give them a comfortable 2-0 win over Rennes on Sunday.

After two goals in the opening period from Christian Vieri and one from Cristian Riva, the hosts took the lead through Marco van Basten in the 22nd minute.

The Rennes keeper failed to stop Vieri’s free-kick and the Portuguese striker headed home from close range.

Rennes went into the break on the front foot, with goalkeeper Marc Wilmots struggling to deal with a long-range shot from Kevin Strootman.

But Porto came close to breaking the deadlock when Alvaro Morata scored the opener.

However, Rennes’ goal was denied by the post as Morata was caught out of position by a tackle from the Porto defence.

Porto’s third came moments after the break when Vieri, who scored against Sevilla, scored a late winner.

Riva headed home a cross from the left, before Morata’s shot deflected off Vieri to set up a dramatic finale.
