A New York restaurant is planning a Mexican-style meal, using the city’s food pantry and its low-income residents
The chef behind one of Mexico’s most popular restaurants is hoping that a new low-budget restaurant that has been opened in a New York City community will help people in Mexico’s capital and surrounding states.
The chef, Guillermo Hidalgo, said he has created a menu that uses local ingredients to make a meal that is “a combination of traditional Mexican dishes with the modern American fare of New York, and we are taking advantage of the food pantries in New York,” the New York Post reported.
In a message posted on Instagram, Hidalgos family said that his restaurant, La Mexicana del Carmen, was opening at La Mexicalana, the Spanish restaurant in the Manhattan boroughs, in mid-September.
The restaurant’s website states it aims to serve Mexican dishes “with authenticity and simplicity, and with love for all that makes our world great.”
Hidalgaso told the Post that he wanted to offer a “real Mexican experience” and that his family had been trying to open restaurants in New Mexico for years.
“When you are a young entrepreneur, you always want to go back to the basics, and the basics are to cook food,” Hidalgianos family told the paper.
“It is important to do things from the ground up.”
The restaurant opened at La México del Carmen in May and has since won a number of accolades.
The family also said they have plans to open another Mexican restaurant in New Orleans and are working to open a Chinese restaurant in Mexico City.
The Mexican government’s food programs are struggling with budget cuts and food shortages and the city is in the midst of an election campaign that is expected to bring new leadership.
Mexico has seen a surge in violence in recent years, with an increase in drug trafficking, the death of hundreds of people and a rise in violence and murder.
Hidalagos family said he is working with local and international partners to create a menu, which includes a “Mexican twist” on traditional Mexican cuisine.
They hope to offer food that is more traditional and will be available for consumption on weekends and at night.
He also said that La Mexica del Carmen will have a small “fusion” menu, consisting of traditional dishes with new American and Mexican ingredients, like chipotle, roasted cauliflower, guacamole and salsa.
